KEEPING YOUR INVENTORY UP-TO-DATE ON YOUR WEBSITE IS KEY FOR BUSINESS. MAKE SURE YOU KNOW THE DIFFERENT OPTIONS
One of the most common requests we receive is how to consistently get inventory into a truck dealership’s website. Having updated inventory is vital to your business, and in this article we want to highlight the different methods we see today.
1. Manual input of inventory in your website
2. Downloading inventory from Truck Paper into your website
3. Displaying your inventory that is actually hosted on another website
4. Downloading inventory from a DMS system such as Procede, Karmak, CDK, etc.
Each method requires some technical know-how but in this article we will try to explain how it works from a high-level.
1. MANUAL INPUT
Manually inputting your website inventory can be a tedious process but inventory has to come from somewhere. Depending on the website provider/system you use, how easy it is to get inventory up and published on your website is key. Make sure you choose the right backend CMS (Content Management System) and walk through the inventory update process of this system before choosing.
2. FROM TRUCK PAPER
Are you automating your inventory updates from Truck Paper? Did the inventory on your website break after Truck Paper’s recent inventory management platform change? That’s because there needs to be some changes made on your website to accommodate their changes. For example, images are downloaded differently now. Before, it was included in a zip file where as now, they are downloaded as links. In a nutshell, if you didn’t change how your automation pulls inventory from Truck Paper into your website, changes in your automation are needed in order to maintain up-to-date inventory on your website.
3. DISPLAYING INVENTORY THAT IS ACTUALLY HOSTED ON ANOTHER WEBSITE
A lot of times your inventory is hosted on an inventory management provider’s website and what your customers see, when on your website, is actually just a window into the host’s website. Given that all of your inventory isn’t stored on your website, Google or Bing doesn’t scan and index it. What does this mean to you the truck dealer? It means your inventory isn’t getting listed on search results that potential customers are seeing when searching for trucks. If your website is hosted elsewhere and your customers are viewing it on your website through this “window”, consider getting your inventory on your own site. A lot of times they provide this option but it will take some work to get it setup.
4. DOWNLOADING YOUR INVENTORY FROM A DMS SYSTEM SUCH AS PROCEDE, KARMAK AND CDK GLOBAL
One of the best options to get inventory onto your website is by automating the downloading of it from your DMS system directly into your website. Why? There’s a lot of information about your trucks in the DMS system. Why not use it to populate your website’s inventory? In most cases, you still have to add images and make other changes for what you want displayed on your website but a lot of the data entry is eliminated by having a system that automatically downloads your inventory from your DMS system into your website automatically.
